What kid doesn't love DIRT? What parent doesn't want their kiddos eagerly adding to their "time outdoors?" This book appeals to both! Alice has wanted to write a children's book for years. When her pastor's wife Virginia suggested that she write about where our food comes from, the ideas started flowing. Being a child at heart, Alice was able to write the message simply which quickly captures the interest of children. The author's husband Bill is an avid gardener. The book explains the gardening process with special emphasis placed on the garden soil - the DIRT. The illustrative pictures from Alice's personal collection, show building of the soil, the planting process, the growing plants, and the delectable vegetables. Children's fascination with playing in the DIRT makes a great segway to teach them about vegetables. Author Alice Hein Schiel, the tenth child of Hugo and Nora Mae Hein, grew up in Somerville, Texas. She graduated from Midwest Bible Institute with a two-year degree in Bible and ministry. She obtained bachelor's and master's degrees in education from Sam Houston State University. Alice and her husband Bill Schiel who reside in Decker Prairie, Texas have four children and thirteen grandchildren. Alice taught Christian education classes for thirty years and public education (junior high and college) for nineteen years. She has published three books: Nora Mae, a Remarkable, Insignificant Person (which won the John E. Weaver Excellent Reads Award for Non-fiction: Biography), Old Yellowed Hat (devotionals/poetry), and Pen of Gold (essays/poetry). Alice has served as church pianist/keyboard player for over forty years. The past three years she served as Director of Children's Ministries at Living Stones Church. Read more
